DescriptionThe whole story▼
Standing on the pegs through a rough section, many riders let the right boot rest on the brake pedal without noticing. On a Yamaha WR450F that habit costs more than it seems: the rear pads touch the disc for minutes at a time, heat builds up, and the rear brake that should be sharp for the next descent turns vague. Accossato's DK168 is a fixed, steel-made rear disc listed for the WR450F from 2003 to 2022. It is 245 mm across and 4 mm thick and takes the place of the original rear disc.
Key Features
- Fixed rear brake disc for the Yamaha WR450F, 2003 to 2022
- Steel-made in one piece, from Accossato's off-road range
- 245 mm outside, 115.2 mm inside diameter
- 4 mm thick when new
- Six 6.2 mm fixing holes on a 133 mm hole circle
- Named by Accossato as interchangeable with the original rear disc
- Minimum working thickness marked on the disc
- Not covered by a German ABE; for off-road competition
Construction and Material Quality
The DK168 is made as a single piece, with no carrier and no rivets between the braking surface and the six holes that bolt it to the rear hub. Its inner opening measures 115.2 mm, and the holes, each 6.2 mm, lie on a 133 mm circle. Accossato traces its disc expertise to the Superbike paddock and to the Moto2 and Moto3 classes. It also marks every disc with the thickness at which it should be taken out of service, the figure to keep an eye on for a rear disc that works as hard as this one.
A Boot Resting on the Pedal
Why does a resting boot matter so much? A rear caliper needs very little pedal pressure before the pads touch the disc, and the weight of a leg is more than enough. Ridden like that through a long section, the rear disc of a WR450F runs hot and the pads glaze. The first signs are a brake that needs more and more pedal, or a faint smell after a long climb. Bluish or straw-coloured marks on the disc surface tell the same story afterwards, and a disc that is cooked again and again may no longer run true.
The cure starts with the set-up rather than with willpower. Adjust the pedal height so that the boot can sit on the peg with its sole clear of the pedal, and check it standing, in riding boots, because that is where the habit forms. Riders who have changed boots or moved the pegs often find the old setting no longer fits. Then make a point of covering the pedal only when you intend to brake. After a day that got the rear disc hot, let it cool before judging it, clean it and measure it against the minimum printed on it. When a replacement is due, fit new pads with the new disc and give them a few gentle stops to bed in.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the DK168 for the WR450F from 2003 to 2022, whatever the generation of the bike, and states that it is interchangeable with the original rear disc. At the front the list divides the years: the DK111 up to 2016, then the fixed DK268 and the floating DK269 from 2016. The rear wheel carries one disc, so a single DK168 does the job. On a WR450F that has seen years of trail riding, check the rear wheel bearings and the sprocket bolts while the wheel is out.
Road Approval
No German ABE and no type approval are documented for this rear disc. Its place is off-road competition, even on a WR450F that carries a number plate.
