DescriptionThe whole story▼

The first S 1000 R arrived as a naked version of BMW's superbike and soon became a favourite for fast country roads and the occasional track day. Many of those bikes have now covered enough distance to need new front discs. Accossato lists the DK007 for the S 1000 R from 2013 to 2022, a fixed front disc made in one steel piece, 320 mm across, and notes that a fitting kit is required to mount it.

Key Features

  • Fixed front brake disc for the BMW S 1000 R, listed 2013 to 2022
  • Includes the Naked entries of 2013 to 2018 and 2020 to 2021
  • One steel piece, as Accossato describes it
  • 320 mm outer, 181 mm inner diameter, 5 mm thick
  • Accossato lists a fitting kit as required on this bike (not included)
  • Minimum thickness printed on the disc
  • One disc per order; two are needed at the front
  • No German ABE documented, for track use

Construction and Material Quality

One steel part does the whole job on the DK007: the centre bolts to the wheel, the outer ring meets the pads. The ring is 320 mm across and 5 mm thick when new, and the centre has a 181 mm bore. Accossato says the tolerances and the raw material were chosen with care, drawing on its racing work in Superbike, Moto2 and Moto3, and it marks each disc with its minimum working thickness, below which the disc should not stay in service.

Changing a Front Disc, Step by Step

Swapping a front disc on the S 1000 R is a job for a competent home mechanic with the right tools, or for a workshop. Support the bike securely with the front wheel off the ground, remove the calipers without letting them hang on their hoses, and slip something clean between the pads so the pistons stay put. Take the wheel out and lay it on a soft surface with the disc facing up. Before fitting the new disc, clean the contact face on the wheel hub until it is free of rust and old thread lock, because any dirt trapped there will make the disc run out of true. Use new bolts if BMW prescribes them, apply thread lock only as BMW specifies, and tighten in a crosswise sequence to the torque given in the workshop manual. With the wheel back in place, check that it spins freely, pump the lever until it is firm again and bed in the new disc with fresh pads before any hard stop. It is also a good moment to feel the wheel bearings for play.

Fitment and Compatibility

Accossato lists the DK007 for the S 1000 R from 2013 to 2022, with entries for the S 1000 R from 2014 to 2022 and the S 1000 R Naked from 2013 to 2018 and 2020 to 2021. For bikes from 2021 the list also names the smaller DK006, so owners of the newer generation should measure before ordering; the DK007 is for a 320 mm disc. The S 1000 R has two discs on the front wheel, and the price is for one.

Road Approval

For the DK007 we hold no German ABE and no type approval, and we supply the disc for track and racing use.

Scope of Delivery
