DescriptionThe whole story▼

Many riders who return to motorcycling after a long break look for what the XJ6 Diversion offers: a name some of them remember from the 1990s, a half fairing that keeps the wind off, and a four-cylinder engine without surprises. The first weeks back are mostly about the left hand, about pulling away, turning slowly and stopping on a slope. Accossato's ESY688, listed for the XJ6 Diversion from 2009 to 2016, is a clutch lever machined from aluminium whose reach adjuster brings the blade to where your hand is comfortable.

Key Features

  • Replaces the clutch lever of the XJ6 Diversion (2009 to 2016)
  • Fits at the original clutch mounting
  • Reach adjustable to suit hand size and gloves
  • Long blade for a lighter pull in orange, blue, gold and green
  • Standard blade approximately 138 mm, available in every colour
  • Machined, anodised aluminium; hub always black
  • Fixed one-piece lever

Construction and Material Quality

The ESY688 is machined from aluminium and anodised. Its black hub holds the pivot bore and the reach adjuster, and its blade is finished in one of seven colours. From hub to tip the blade is rigid and continuous, without a folding section, so there is no hinge that could rattle on a bumpy road or wear loose over the years. For a rider relearning clutch control that has a practical side: the bite point is always in the same place, and the hand only has to learn it once.

Coming Back After Years Away

Skills fade more slowly than confidence, but clutch control is usually the one that takes longest to return. After a long break the friction zone feels narrow, the engine stalls at the worst moment, and tight turns at walking pace are hard work. Two things help. First, a lever that meets the fingers early: set the ESY688 closer to the grip, so the take-up begins while your hand is still relaxed instead of at the end of a long stretch. Second, practice in an empty car park, pulling away and stopping again and again until finding the bite point is automatic. The long blade gives more leverage and therefore a lighter pull, which is kind to a hand that is out of practice. If you took a refresher course before buying your XJ6 Diversion, set the lever the way you learned there and leave it alone.

Fitment and Compatibility

Three Diversion entries in Accossato's list name this lever: XJ 600 S Diversion for 2009 to 2012 and again for 2013 to 2016, plus XJ6 600 Diversion for 2009 to 2015. Taken together, that means 2009 to 2016. The ESY688 takes the place of the stock lever at the original clutch mounting. Its partner on the brake side is the EDF016, listed for the XJ6 Diversion from 2009 to 2015.

Road Approval

Without a documented ABE for German roads, the ESY688 is supplied for track use.
