Dust does not reach an engine in a straight line. The air is pulled through ducting and into a box first, and every corner costs the heaviest particles their ride: grit is thrown against a wall and drops out of the stream before the medium sees it. What reaches the filter face of a road-ridden GSX-8T is the light end of the dirt outside — the fraction that stays suspended and follows every turn the air takes. The Sprint Filter P14 is made for that fraction: a dry special nonwoven rated at 14 microns where the standard P08 is rated at 80.
Key Features
- Dry special nonwoven medium, filtration rated at 14 microns
- Airflow of 1,800 litres per square metre per second against the P08's 5,050 — retention is paid for in flow
- No oil at any stage, so nothing can be drawn off it onto the intake sensors
- Made to the series airbox of the GSX-8T: the original comes out, this goes in, the map is left alone
- Cleaned with an air line and refitted rather than bought again, for a life as long as the bike's
- Sprint Filter's guarantee runs two years from purchase
What actually reaches the element
Filtration does not matter less on the road; it matters at a smaller scale than most riders picture. Eighty microns is a serious rating — Sprint Filter measured the P08 holding 93.13 per cent of 100-micron test particles against 76.42 per cent for four-layer oiled cotton — but those figures describe the coarse end, and the coarse end is largely what the intake path has already dealt with. What is left is the airborne fine fraction: mineral dust off dry verges, crop dust in late summer. The P14 answers it with a different construction rather than a tighter weave, a mat of fibres holding particles through its depth, workable in a series housing because so much more medium is folded into it.
The flow you are handing over
1,800 against 5,050 is no rounding error, and the 776 cc twin of the GSX-8T is the largest engine on this part number. If your 8T sees sustained wide-open throttle, track days, or an exhaust and map that have been opened up, the P08 at 80 microns and 5,050 litres is the better balanced element and the one to buy. The P14 belongs to the other 8T, ridden at part throttle on rural roads through summer dust and loose chippings, where the ceiling is never approached and the fine fraction turns up on every ride. Finer media follow the same line: P037 at 37 microns and 4,500 litres, T12 at 7 and 560. Every step finer holds back more and passes less — a trade, not a ranking.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air does the work: put the line on the clean face of the SM245P14 and drive the dirt back out the way it came in. Where air no longer manages, wash it in lukewarm water with a mild detergent and rinse until it leaves clear. Let it dry right through in moving air, never with heat or flame, and refit it dry. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
