The price list puts the Super Adventure R and the Super Adventure S on one line and gives them one filter number. On the road they are not one motorcycle: the S is built for distance and pace on tarmac, the R for leaving it. Almost everywhere else in a parts catalogue that difference matters. Here it does not — and the same line is then offered both a racing weave and an extreme off-road mat, with nothing said about which belongs to which.
Key Features
- Racing weave in dry polyester: 85 µm, rated at 15,000 l/m²/sec
- One number for the R and the S — the two share the airbox this element is cut for
- Fits the series housing directly, with no modification and no remap needed
- No oil at any point, so nothing can migrate downstream onto air sensors
- Cleaned with compressed air and refitted rather than replaced
- Two-year guarantee from the date of purchase
One row, two very different riders
An element is specified against a housing, and the R and the S share theirs, so the catalogue hands the choice of medium straight to the owner without guidance. Three points are available for this box: 85 µm at 15,000 l/m²/sec at one end, 7 µm at 560 at the other, and the standard 80 µm at 5,050 between them. An S ridden two-up at sustained motorway speed and an R on a dusty track ask opposite questions of the same box. Applying the R and S distinction is the owner's job — the fitment row will not do it, and nothing in the pricing hints at it either.
Reading the flow figure narrowly
Fifteen thousand litres per square metre per second is measured on clean cloth in a steady stream. It describes a ceiling that has to be reached before any of it is spent, and it is reached by holding the throttle wide open rather than by sampling it. On a fully loaded adventure bike crossing a country, that state occupies a very small share of the day. So the plain answer for most Super Adventure owners is that the standard element is the right part, and this one is a sustained-load specification that asks a little over twice as much. It will not add power to a standard machine either; no air filter does.
Care and cleaning
Regeneration is mechanical. Hold a compressor line against the clean side of PM155S F1-85 and work outward, so that everything the weave stopped leaves the way it entered. An R that comes home properly dirty will want more: warm water with a mild washing-up detergent, worked gently through the cloth, then rinsed until the water is clear. After that it needs open air and patience and nothing else, because heat from a gun, a radiator or a flame is what polyester will not survive. It goes back into the airbox dry, with nothing sprayed onto it. Instructions are in the Downloads tab.
