An airbox is not a dry room. On a machine like the ZXR-14 Ninja, bought to cover distance and made to do it in whatever weather the day supplies, damp air, road spray and the occasional genuine soaking all reach the element sooner or later. That is worth settling before choosing what sits there, because water treats the three common filter materials very differently. It is also the honest reason to fit a Sprint Filter P08: a drop-in element does not make a standard ZXR-14 Ninja noticeably stronger, and nothing sold for a standard airbox does.
Key Features
- Dry woven polyester, single layer, never oiled — nothing to thin in the wet or carry onto the sensors
- 80 µm filtration at 5,050 l/m²/sec — the road and track medium
- Woven from polyester thread of ø 22 microns and upwards, with the opening set by the weave
- About twice the filtering surface of other performance elements
- Replaces the paper panel in the series airbox: no modification, no remap
- Washed and used again rather than replaced; two years' warranty from purchase
What water does to a filter element
Paper is pressed cellulose. Wet, it swells and softens, and it does not come back to what it was — which is why a soaked paper panel is a replacement whether it looks like one or not. An oiled cotton element keeps much of its filtration in a tacky film, and that film is the first thing water thins; putting it right means cleaning, drying and re-oiling to the correct dose, with a wrong dose costing either filtration or flow. Dry polyester has neither problem. Wet is a temporary state for it: the element is washed on purpose during a normal service, dried in open air and refitted untreated, unchanged by the trip.
Retention is a percentage, not a wall
A micron figure describes behaviour rather than a barrier. Sprint Filter's own comparison puts the dry P08 at 93.13 per cent retention of 100-micron test particles, with four-layer oiled cotton at 76.42 per cent — both proportions, and far apart. Weaving finer moves that proportion up and the flow down every time: the range runs on to 37 µm at 4,500 l/m²/sec, 14 µm at 1,800 and 7 µm at 560, each step paid for in air. It is a trade set by the conditions a motorcycle meets, not a ladder with a best rung.
Care and cleaning
Normal service for the PM161S is compressed air, directed at the clean face so the dirt leaves the way it arrived. When something stays behind, wash it in lukewarm water with mild detergent and rinse clear. It then dries in moving air at its own pace — never with heat, never with a flame — and goes back in dry and untreated. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet sits in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the standard airbox of the Kawasaki ZXR-14 Ninja + ABS built from 2012 to 2026. Two entries share this element, ZXR-14 Ninja + ABS and ZZR 1400 + ABS, and they are the same 1400 under two names — same displacement, same model years, same airbox. The catalogue follows the airbox, not the name on the tank, so order by element code and year. Both are listed in the Fitment tab.
