Why the Rate Holds
The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain.

What This Rate Does
This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
Rate and the Linkage
The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it.
Applications
If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers.
Installation
Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct. Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops.
Road Approval
Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.
