A clear coat over black is the deepest surface a helmet can have — it reads almost wet in good light, and it is what makes a helmet look expensive from across a car park. It is also the least forgiving surface in existence for two specific things. Road film shows on it immediately, because grey dust on a black mirror is maximum contrast; and swirl marks from dry-wiping are permanently visible once they are there, since every one of them catches light. Wash it wet, dry it with a clean microfibre, and it will outlast the matt version cosmetically — a gloss coat can be polished back where matt cannot, so light damage is recoverable rather than permanent. Treat it like a matt helmet, dry-wiping it at fuel stops, and it will look worse within a season than the matt version ever will.

Three shells, and what KPA actually is

KPA is a marketing name for a plastic, and marketing names for plastics deserve scepticism, so here is the plain reading. It is a polycarbonate-based blend, injection-moulded, chosen because it is cheap to produce in three separate shell sizes and because it deals well with sharp, concentrated impacts — a stone, a kerb edge, a footpeg — by denting rather than cracking. What it costs is mass. Seven sizes, three shells, split XS–S / M–L / XL–3XL.

Ninety degrees, and how the chin bar locks

The chin-bar lock is the part of this helmet SHARP scrutinised most, and the number is in the section above rather than buried here: the bar stayed fully locked in 37 % of impacts. What that means mechanically is that the latch released under severe loading in most tests. What it means practically is limited by the dual homologation — this helmet is tested and approved with the bar up as well as down.

What ECE 22.06 and the P/J label mean

P/J is the paperwork most buyers skip and shouldn't. Under ECE 22.06 a modular helmet can be homologated as a full-face (P), as a jet (J), or as both. This one is both: submitted and tested closed, then again open, and passed in each. A flip-up carrying P alone is certified in one configuration only, which makes riding it open legally ambiguous across much of Europe.

Twin Visor, sun visor — and the Pinlock that is not in the box

A word on the anti-fog lens, since it is not supplied. A Pinlock works by physics rather than chemistry: a second screen sealed against the inside of the visor on a silicone bead, trapping a thin layer of air that keeps the inner surface above the dew point of your breath. It does not wear off the way a coating does. On a helmet ridden through European winters it is the single most valuable forty euros you will spend, and this one is ready for it.

Air, the breath deflector and the elastic-band liner

Multi-density EPS deserves its own line. The impact liner is not one uniform block of polystyrene but several grades placed where each performs best — and given that this shell scored five out of five at both lower test speeds, that arrangement is doing its job. Ventilation channels are moulded into the same liner rather than cut into it afterwards.

1700 grams, no emergency release, and the rest of the honest list

Being straight about the emergency release, because it is the one specification on this page that is about the worst day rather than an ordinary one. Paramedics remove a helmet from a rider who may have a neck injury by taking the cheek pads out first, so the shell lifts straight rather than being rotated over the jaw. Helmets with pull tabs make that fast. This one does not have them, and the pads come out the ordinary way.

The rest of the list: 1700 g, no supplied Pinlock, ninety degrees of chin-bar travel, and no published noise figure — because none has been measured, and we are not going to estimate one and print it as fact.

When something wears out

A complete chin bar is stocked in all twelve colourways, which is unusual at this price and worth knowing before you write off a scuffed helmet. On a graphic finish it matters more than on a solid one: the Monza, Orion, Code and Lux patterns all run across the join between bar and shell, so a plain black replacement would break the design at the most visible point on the helmet.

In the box

LS2 FF908 Strobe II helmet — Gloss Black

Carrying bag

Reflective stickers

🔵 No Pinlock® insert — the visor is prepared for one (DKS520), sold separately

Specification

Model — LS2 FF908 Strobe II

Part number — 569081012

Colour — Gloss Black — Gloss black

Homologation — ECE 22.06, dual P/J (protective and jet)

Safety rating — SHARP 4 of 5 stars (tested August 2026, ECE 22.06); chin bar fully locked in 37 % of impacts

Helmet type — Flip-up / modular, chin bar raising 90° with locking system

Shell — KPA (Kinetic Polymer Alloy), three shell sizes (XS–S / M–L / XL–3XL)

Weight — 1700 g (±50 g)

Sizes — XS to 3XL (seven sizes)

Anti-fog — prepared for Pinlock® 70 MaxVision™ (DKS520) — insert NOT supplied

Visor — Twin Visor System, scratch-resistant, UV-stable, quick-release

Sun visor — integrated, tinted, drop-down

Impact liner — multi-density EPS with moulded ventilation channels

Retention — micrometric ratchet buckle, reinforced chin strap, chin bar lock

Emergency release — not fitted on this model

Ventilation — chin intake, top intake, rear exhaust port, breath deflector

Liner — 3D laser-cut, elastic-band crown, hypoallergenic, breathable, removable and washable

Intercom — prepared for the current LS2 Bluetooth system

Serviceability — complete chin bar available as a spare part in every one of the twelve colourways
