Drawn Around This Fairing
The Panigale profile takes account of how little space there is between the clip-on and the fairing inner. A universal body fits; this one fits without the cables complaining at full lock.
Electronic Öhlins in 2012
The S carried Ducati's first electronically adjustable suspension on a superbike, changed from the dashboard rather than with a screwdriver. It was genuinely early and it worked better than it had any right to.
Engine Brake Control
Ducati gave the 1199 adjustable engine braking, which on a big twin with this much compression is not a luxury. Without it the rear wheel takes considerable persuading to stay in line under downshifts.
Throttle Assembly Only
The switch block stays. This is the housing by itself, which is the appropriate purchase when the switchgear works and the moulded plastic is the objection.
A Cut Bore
The tube rotates inside a machined bore rather than a moulded one. It stays round, the grip keeps its feel and the position sensor keeps reading the same angle for the same movement.
One Finish
Black, anodised through the surface. On a motorcycle whose bodywork does all the talking, a quiet cockpit is the correct decision.
Cut From Solid
Ergal 7075, an aerospace grade at roughly twice the yield strength of ordinary machined alloy. Harder to cut and considerably better where it clamps.
Forged Marchesini Wheels
The S's rims saved rotating mass at the point where it does the most good. On a motorcycle already at 164 kilograms dry, it made the steering noticeably lighter still.
The Version Most People Chose
The S outsold the base 1199 substantially, because the suspension difference was obvious from the first corner. Second-hand it remains the one worth looking for.
