ABS You Could Switch Off
Ducati fitted a Bosch system with several modes including fully disabled, at a time when a great many manufacturers were making that increasingly difficult. It was aimed at people who took the bike to circuits.
Electronic Öhlins
Damping changed from the dashboard rather than with a screwdriver. Ducati was early to this and the implementation on the 1199 S worked considerably better than anyone expected it to.
Either Brake Assembly
The universal slots fit the original master cylinder and the radial units. One part number rather than two, which is how it should be but frequently is not.
Black, Red or Titanium
All three grown into the surface electrochemically. Nothing sits on top of the metal, so nothing lifts from an edge after a decade of gloves and sunlight.
What Stops Working
The terminal beneath the button rather than the mechanism above it, once moisture has reached it and stayed. The fault is intermittent for a season and then it is not.
Sealed, Not Covered
The elements sit inside the body itself. There is no snap-fit lid to lose tension across ten years of a big twin's vibration.
Forged Marchesini Wheels
The S's rims took rotating mass out of a motorcycle already at 164 kilograms dry. The steering became lighter still, which on a bike this focused was not obviously necessary.
Factory Plug
The unit is pre-wired to Ducati's connector. Nothing is cut and nothing appears on the dashboard when the ignition comes back on.
Data Acquisition as Standard
The S logged channels to a memory key for later analysis without any accessory being fitted. On a road-registered motorcycle in 2012 that was a genuinely unusual thing to find, and it tells you what Ducati assumed owners would do with the bike.
