Suspension Rather Than Power
Fully adjustable Kayaba units, a lighter battery and a single seat. Aprilia's Factory treatment on the 660 buys chassis control, which on a bike this light is a better purchase than horsepower would be.
The Engine Is the Frame
Aprilia bolts the swingarm directly to the engine and leaves out the rear subframe entirely. The result is compact and light, and it is also close to impossible to modify.
Aligned Mounting
Both holes on one axis. It is one of two patterns in circulation and the wrong choice becomes apparent about thirty seconds into the installation rather than before it.
Ten Thousand Five Hundred Revs
The 659 cc twin peaks unusually high for the format because it inherited superbike cylinder dimensions. It behaves nothing like the long-stroke twins that fill this class.
Black Anodised
A single finish converted into the aluminium. The Factory livery is distinctive enough that a quiet set of controls generally sits better with it than a contrasting one.
Sealed and Milled
Cut from Ergal 7075 with military-specification elements enclosed. A naked bike gives its switchgear nothing at all, so the housing does the entire job.
Where the Original Gives Up
Moulded switchgear does not wear out mechanically. Water sits against a contact through a winter, corrodes it, and the fault surfaces the following spring as something intermittent.
Aprilia's Connector
Pre-wired, so nothing is cut. Fifteen minutes with a hex key and the job is finished.
Weight Removed Rather Than Added
No rear subframe, a lithium battery, a single seat unit and a frame that uses the engine as structure. Aprilia took mass out of the design rather than specifying exotic materials to compensate for it, which is both harder and considerably more effective.
