Surface Printing Goes First
The legends on a moulded block fade under ultraviolet within a few seasons. A machined body carries none, so a rider operates by position rather than by reading anything.
Thermal Cycling
Cold start, considerable warmth, cold again, several hundred times a year. Moulded plastic creeps under that and aluminium is entirely indifferent to it.
Snap Fittings and Vibration
Two halves held by clips, on an engine revving to 14.500. Across a few seasons the tension goes and the block starts moving slightly against the bar in a way that cannot be corrected.
Depth in the Anodising
The colour penetrates the metal rather than sitting on it. On a superbike that gets worked on regularly, that is the difference between a component that ages and one that looks damaged.
Reversible for a Sale
Nothing cut anywhere in the harness. The original assembly goes back on in twenty minutes and there is no evidence that it ever came off.
Four Finishes
Black, red, titanium and copper, all grown into the aluminium. Against the S's gold suspension, copper is a considerably braver choice than titanium and it works surprisingly well.
Semi-Active Öhlins
Damping adjusted several times a second from the inertial platform. On a superbike the weight moves between the wheels faster than any fixed setting can usefully follow.
Slide by Brake
Ducati's system allows a controlled amount of rear slide on corner entry rather than preventing it. It came directly from MotoGP and it is configured from the left-hand block.
Forged Wheels
The S's rims remove rotating and unsprung mass where both cost the most. It is felt at every direction change rather than only at the top of the rev range.
