The standard housing refits on its own fasteners with no replacement seals required, so the engine can be returned to specification whenever it needs to be.
Machined Rather Than Cast
Turned from billet with the sealing face cut in one operation, which is why the finish is flat enough to seal on a ring alone.
A Tidier Engine
On a naked motorcycle the top of the engine is part of the design, and a milled cover reads as deliberate where a capped hose reads as unfinished.
What Is Gained
One fewer perishable component on the engine, a tidier top end and an exhaust port that cannot admit anything. No power, no throttle response and no consumption change, which is worth stating plainly.
Torque Into Aluminium
The fasteners thread into the cylinder head, and Triumph specifies a figure for good reason. Guessing at it is the commonest way a straightforward twenty-minute job turns into a thread repair and a considerably longer afternoon.
What the Reeds Are Actually For
They allow air in one direction only, so exhaust pressure cannot push gas back towards the airbox. When one cracks that protection disappears, and the evidence turns up as soot inside the filter housing.
Nothing Hidden
The cover is visible to anybody who looks at the engine, which is the correct way for a change of this kind to work.
