Nine Hundred and Three Cubic Centimetres
A liquid-cooled V-twin with belt drive, tuned entirely for torque low down. The Vulcan 900 has never pretended to be anything other than a cruiser.
Belt Drive
Clean, quiet and needing almost no attention, which on a motorcycle ridden in ordinary clothes is worth considerably more than the small weight penalty.
Nothing Written to Memory
Because the self-test passes rather than being bypassed, no code is stored for a later reader to find. That matters when the motorcycle goes to a dealer for something unrelated.
What the Unit Contains
A resistance matched to the solenoid coil, potted in a sealed body with Kawasaki's own connector moulded on. There is nothing to configure and no way to fit it wrongly.
Heat Cycles, Not Kilometres
The reeds sit at cylinder head temperature and flex on every closed throttle. They fail with age rather than with distance, which surprises owners of low-mileage machines.
Nothing to Reset
No idle setting, no throttle balance and no fuelling change. The engine runs exactly as it did, because the valve was never doing anything while the engine was working.
Inexpensive Compared With What It Fixes
The part costs a fraction of a silencer and cures the thing most owners bought the silencer hoping to change. That is worth saying before the larger sum is spent.
Where the Valve Actually Sits
Generally above the airbox and behind the steering head on the larger models, which is why the tank has to come off. On the smaller bikes it is easier to reach and the job is correspondingly shorter.
An Inexpensive Fix for an Expensive Complaint
Riders spend real money on exhausts trying to cure a crackle that has nothing to do with the silencer, and then more money again on mapping. The valve is almost always the answer and almost never the first thing anybody suspects.
