DescriptionThe whole story▼
CY20239 is the right-hand carbon wing of the R9 race bodywork, mounted on the CY20232 flank and run as a pair with CY20237 on the other side.
Key Features
- Right-hand wing, moulded in carbon to match the flanks
- Attaches to the CY20232 side panel
- Autoclave-cured prepreg construction
- Ordered on its own, so a damaged side does not force a pair
- Bare buffed weave, no clearcoat
How a Wing Is Loaded
It is easy to underestimate the force a small aerodynamic element carries. Downforce grows with the square of speed, so a wing that feels like a decoration in the pit lane is working hard at the end of a straight, and all of that load arrives at two or three fasteners in a composite panel. That is why the mounting matters more than the wing: the panel behind it needs its fasteners clean and correctly torqued, and any wing that has taken a knock deserves a look at the panel underneath before the next session, not just at the wing itself.
Transport Is Where Wings Get Damaged
More wings are broken in vans than on circuits. They are the widest thing on the bike at that height, they stick out exactly where someone reaches past to grab a strap, and a ratchet strap run across one will crack the mounting long before it marks the surface. Teams that stop losing wings are the ones that either take them off for transport or build a spacer into the loading routine so nothing can lean against them.
Run Them in Pairs
One wing on and one wing off is not a configuration. It adds a steady sideways load that does not cancel out, and it does so most strongly exactly where the bike is already working hardest. If one is lost, either replace it before running or take both off.
