DescriptionThe whole story▼
Fifteen minutes, and one and a half kilograms. On a 169 kg learner sportsbike that is the cheapest meaningful weight reduction available, and it is a job an owner can do on a paddock stand with a socket set.
Key Features
- 1.5 kg against the standard 2.9 kg: 1.4 kg and 48.3 per cent less
- Carbon fibre construction
- 1.0 PS more at 11,000 rpm and 0.8 Nm at 9,200 rpm
- Fifteen minutes to fit — among the quickest in this catalogue
- No major modification to the standard system required
- EC and ECE type approved, to the Euro 3 standard of its era
An Early R3
Yamaha launched the R3 in 2015 and the Japanese R25 a year earlier, and Akrapovic states this exhaust is compliant with Euro 3 — the emissions standard in force at the time. That is worth knowing on a machine now ten years old: the approval reflects the rules its generation was built to, not today's.
For registration purposes an EC type approval remains an EC type approval. If a particular authority queries it, contact us before ordering and we will confirm the current certificate with Akrapovic.
The Insert: What the Two Sources Say
Akrapovic's product description states that the noise insert is removable. The technical data sheet for this part number does not record an insert at all.
We are not going to pick the more attractive of the two. If the insert matters to your use — a circuit with a static noise limit, for instance — ask us before ordering and we will confirm the delivery contents with Akrapovic.
For Riders Who Do Not Want to Rebuild
Akrapovic describes the Slip-On Line as designed for riders who do not want to make major modifications to the standard system. That is exactly right for this machine: the headers stay, the ECU is untouched, and the standard silencer goes back on in a quarter of an hour if the bike is sold.
Where the Weight Sits on an R3
Yamaha hangs the R3's silencer high on the right, behind the rider's leg. That is the worst position on a motorcycle for mass: it works against the bike every time it is flicked from one side to the other.
1.4 kg out of there does more for how an R3 changes direction than the same weight taken from anywhere low would. On a machine used to learn on, that is the change a rider notices first.
A Bike Bought to Learn On
The R3 and R25 are A2 machines, usually somebody's first sportsbike and usually kept for two or three years before something bigger. An exhaust that fits in a quarter of an hour and comes off just as fast suits that pattern exactly.
Carbon on a Small Bike
1.5 kg of carbon silencer on a 169 kg motorcycle is nearly one per cent of the whole machine, taken from the highest and least helpful place it could sit. Proportionally that beats what most litre-bike slip-ons manage.
Fitment and Compatibility
S-Y2SO12-HAPC covers the Yamaha YZF-R3 and YZF-R25 from 2014 through 2016. Yamaha revised both for 2017, and later machines take a different part.
