Every service interval in a handbook rests on an assumption nobody prints beside it: the air the machine will be breathing. The figure was settled with a paper panel and an unremarkable road in mind. Where the road is not unremarkable — a gravel approach ridden twice a day, a summer of roadworks, a coastal town in August — the interval keeps its wording and quietly loses its meaning. Filtration and interval are one statement

A medium that stops more of what a road throws up hands the engine a cleaner charge over the same distance, which is another way of saying the printed interval goes on meaning what it meant when it was written. The other half of that has to be said too, because it is the half nobody mentions: an element that traps more reaches its own limit sooner. That cost lands on the owner rather than on the engine, and it is settled with an air line instead of an order form.

What the fine medium gives up

1,800 litres per square metre per second against the 5,050 of the standard woven P08 is the entire trade, and it reads as a trade rather than as a ranking. Finer holds back more and passes less; coarser does the reverse. On a 300 cc twin the demand side of the sum is modest, which is the reason this step is affordable here at all. What it is not is a power part. No element sitting inside an unaltered airbox makes a standard R3 quicker, and this one asks a little from the airflow budget rather than adding to it.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air, held against the clean face of the PM44P14 and worked outwards, sends dust back out the way it came in. When a salted or wet season leaves a film the air will not lift, lukewarm water with a mild detergent does, rinsed until the water runs clear. The element then dries in moving air and nothing else — no heat gun, no radiator, no flame, since heat is what actually finishes polyester — and goes back dry and untreated.
