Very little of the dust an air filter deals with is raised by the motorcycle breathing it. It is lifted by whatever went past a moment earlier: the car ahead on a dry gravel approach, a tractor on a field road in August, four bikes in front of you on the same unsealed mile. Riding at the head of a group and riding at the back of one are not the same air supply, and nothing about the machine changes between them. That is the variable this element is bought against.

Position in the line decides the load

Air that has been disturbed stays disturbed for a while. The coarse part of what a wheel throws up falls back quickly, but the fine fraction hangs where it was left, and a rider arriving a few seconds later collects it. On rallies and organised runs a Challenger Dark Horse can spend an entire day in somebody else's wake, which is why two identical machines covering the same route can present very different elements at the next service. A medium is therefore chosen for the worst company the bike is likely to keep, not for the average of a season.

What the finer mat costs

Every step down in rating is paid for in flow, and the bill arrives on every ride rather than only on the dusty ones: 1,800 l/m²/sec here against 5,050 for the standard weave in the same frame. That is the whole trade, and it is a trade and not a ranking — the coarser cloth is the right answer for a machine that lives on clean tarmac. It should also be said plainly that neither medium makes the motorcycle quicker. An element sitting in an untouched airbox has no route to more power. What it offers is a resistance figure that can be returned to where it started, as often as the riding requires.

Care and cleaning

The service tool is an air line, held against the clean side of the PM237P14 and worked outwards until the mat looks even again. Grease and road film need lukewarm water and a mild washing-up liquid, rinsed through until nothing more comes away. After that, only open air at ordinary room temperature: no warming cupboard, no hot-air gun, no flame, since heat is what actually ends these elements. Refit it fully dry and untreated.
