Read the fitment list of this element and it is the omission that talks. Among the 1200-generation boxers only the Adventure appears; the standard R 1200 GS built alongside it does not, though the two share a housing — the standard element is listed for both, which settles what physically fits. So the gap is not mechanical. It is an opinion about where these motorcycles get taken, written into a part number.
Key Features
- Dry special non-woven polyester closing to 14 microns, a mat rather than a woven cloth
- Rated flow of 1,800 l/m²/sec against the 5,050 of the standard element for this housing
- No oil in it when new and none after washing, so nothing can be carried on to the sensors
- Roughly twice the filtering surface of an ordinary performance panel, in the original outline
- Goes in where the paper panel came out: no cutting, no adapter, no change to the mapping
- Cleared with compressed air and used again, two years of warranty from purchase
An opinion written into a part number
Two motorcycles built on one platform can meet completely different air, and the reason is never the engine. It is the tank range, the standard tyres and the sort of day the machine was bought for. An Adventure is specified for distance away from tarmac and its owners take it there; the plain GS of those seasons was more often a road bike with generous ground clearance. Sprint Filter drew a dust medium for the first and left the second on the standard weave. Whether that matches your own riding is the only question worth putting.
What fourteen microns costs and buys
Every step towards a finer medium is paid for in air. This mat is rated at 1,800 l/m²/sec where the standard cloth carries 5,050 — a little over a third of the flow through the same area of material — and in exchange it closes on part of what an 80-micron weave passes without noticing: the fine, slow-settling fraction a dry track puts into the air and keeps there. Retention and flow move in opposite directions, always, so this is a choice of conditions and never a rung on a ladder. Neither medium adds power. A panel inside an untouched airbox does not make a standard GS Adventure noticeably stronger; it changes what the intake meets, not what the engine makes.
Care and cleaning
The routine is an air line and five minutes. Direction matters with a mat: the nozzle belongs on the face that looks towards the engine, so the load leaves the way it came in rather than being driven deeper. When a dry spell has packed it tighter than air will clear, hand-warm water with a trace of mild detergent finishes the job, rinsed until nothing more washes out. Drying is passive — moving air alone, no heater, no oven, nothing carrying a flame — and the PM142P14 is refitted dry. The servicing sheet is under the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the BMW R 1200 GS Adventure of 2014 to 2018, seated in the series airbox with nothing altered around it. Four machines carry this part number: this Adventure and three of the 1250 boxers, each named with its years in the Fitment tab.
