Eighty-five microns is not a step up in filtration; it is five microns more open than the standard element, traded for a flow rating three times higher. Offered on a machine whose other option is a 7-micron mat for dust, that is a striking thing to find in the listing, and it deserves a straight answer about who should be buying it.

What the medium was drawn for

Closed courses, where the air has already been swept by a field of machines and the element is pulled and blown out between sessions. By Sprint Filter's own account its filters are the most widely used in MotoGP, Moto3, World Superbike, Supersport and Superstock — a manufacturer's statement about where its products are found rather than an independent measurement, and worth taking as exactly that. The specification behind those paddocks assumes a service rhythm nobody keeps on the road.

Why an adventure twin is an awkward home for it

The flow ceiling here is only approached with the throttle held wide and the engine turning hard, which is a small share of the hours a loaded MT 800 puts in. The wider weave, by contrast, is open in every one of them. Set against that, the standard element is not a handicap and this one is not an upgrade; it costs a little over twice as much and buys a number this motorcycle rarely calls for. Nor does either of them add power to a standard bike. Fit it if the machine has moved to closed courses and the airbox is opened on a race schedule — otherwise the answer is on one of the other two pages.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air directed from the clean face outwards, which for a track element usually means after every session rather than every service. Stubborn film comes off with lukewarm water and a mild detergent, rinsed clear. Drying is cold and unhurried — moving air only, never heat and never a flame — and the PM228S F1-85 is refitted dry, with nothing applied to it.
