A 2025 model year means there is no service history to inherit. Nobody has yet ridden a 500RR far enough to say what its airbox looks like after a season, in the conditions you ride in, on the roads you use. That makes the first filter inspection unusually valuable: it is a measurement rather than a formality, and a washable element is the one that lets you take it without buying a replacement first.

Set your own interval, then keep it

Manufacturer service intervals are written for an average that may not describe your riding at all. The honest way to find yours is to look: pull the element after a few hundred kilometres of normal use, note what it has collected, and space the next inspection accordingly. With a disposable panel that costs money every time you check. With the SM261S it costs an afternoon, and the same part goes back in — which is why an owner of a bike this new is in a better position to set a real interval than anyone who came before.

One code, two machines, two displacements

This part number is also listed for the Kove 450 RR. Two manufacturers, two displacements, one element — which is a useful reminder that a filter is dimensioned to the housing it seals, not to the engine behind it. The consequence is worth keeping in mind on a bike with more capacity than its sister: the cloth area is fixed by the box, so the same panel serves a larger appetite. It changes nothing about fit and nothing about the specification. It simply means the reserve above what the engine draws is a little smaller here than on the 450 — and in neither case does the element add power. In an unmodified airbox it leaves a standard 500RR exactly as strong as it was.

Care and cleaning

Air first: the compressor line against the clean side of the SM261S, swept outwards so the load leaves the way it arrived. If grey stays in the weave after that, wash it — lukewarm water, a mild detergent, rinsing continued until nothing clouds the water. Then let it stand in moving air at room temperature until it is dry through. Heat of any sort is out, because a woven medium takes that damage silently. Nothing is applied before it goes back in.
