Every service leaves something behind: a rag with chain lube, a litre of drained oil, a paper panel binned because the schedule says so. A Scrambler 400 X is bought to be ridden away from all of that and then kept running with a small pile of it. Of everything on that list, the air filter is the one entry that need not be there: a dry polyester element is washed and put back, which turns a repeating purchase into a fitting that stays with the motorcycle.
Key Features
- Single-layer woven polyester, dry from the first kilometre and dry again after every wash
- Filtration rated at 80 microns, airflow rated at 5,050 l/m²/sec
- The 22 microns quoted for this fabric describe the thread itself, never the openings between threads
- Seats in the series airbox precisely where the original sat: no cutting, no spacer, no reflash
- Roughly double the filtering surface other performance elements bring to this housing
- Blown through and used again; built to last the motorcycle, warranted two years from purchase
The side of maintenance nobody photographs
Add up what ten years of intervals consume. A disposable panel is ordered, fitted and discarded, then ordered again. An oiled cotton element swaps that for two chemicals — a cleaner and a spray oil, both bought in bottles, both eventually thrown out — plus the rags in between. The dry polyester of CM267S wants an air line, and once in a while water with a drop of washing-up liquid. Nothing waits on a shelf, goes to a recycling point, or runs out the evening before a ride. What it will not do is stretch Triumph's inspection interval — the schedule still decides when the airbox is opened; only what leaves the bench afterwards changes.
What 80 microns is worth
Media trade retention against throughput. A tighter weave keeps more out and passes less, a looser one does the opposite, and neither is the better component in the abstract. This one sits at the road-and-track setting of that scale: in Sprint Filter's own comparison it held back 93.13 per cent of 100-micron test particles where four-layer oiled cotton managed 76.42 per cent. Worth stating flatly: a drop-in element does not make a standard 400 single noticeably quicker. The benefit is duller: an intake resistance that begins low and returns there at every cleaning instead of creeping upward until somebody buys a replacement.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air on the clean inner face, so the dirt leaves along the path it arrived on. Where grime has settled deeper than air reaches, lukewarm water with a mild detergent finishes it; rinse until the water comes away clear and leave it in moving air. Heat ruins the weave, so keep radiators, hot air guns and flame away, and never fit it damp. No oiling stage follows. The full maintenance sheet is filed under the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Listed for the Triumph Scrambler 400 X, model years 2024 through 2026. Three machines from Triumph's 400 range share one airbox and therefore one part number; the Fitment tab gives each its own years, the third joining only in the final season.
