Kawasaki stopped building this generation of the Versys 1000 in 2019, and for most service items that date starts a clock: supply thins, then moves to whichever warehouse still has a shelf of them. The intake panel is the exception. The PM111S is not really a Versys part — it is the element for an airbox Kawasaki has kept in production, fitted to the Ninja 1000 SX, to the Z1100 and Ninja 1100 SX of 2026 and to two Bimota models on the same engine. Twelve machines across sixteen model years hold one code in the catalogue, which for this one item puts the owner of a discontinued tourer on current-part footing.
Key Features
- Woven polyester used dry, so there is no oil to dose and no film to wash back out
- 80 microns of filtration with 5,050 l/m²/sec of flow — the road and track medium
- Retention measured at 93.13 % of 100-micron particles; oiled cotton returned 76.42 %
- Around twice the filtering area of the usual performance element
- Direct replacement for the paper panel in the standard airbox — no modification, no remap
- Cleaned rather than replaced, for the life of the bike; two years of warranty
The consumable that outlives the model
Owning a discontinued touring bike is largely parts logistics: what is stocked, what has a lead time, what is worth putting on a shelf before it disappears. A washable element removes one line from that list permanently, and the shared fitment removes a second. The PM111S is ordered as a code rather than as a model part, so a search that finds nothing under the bike still finds it under the number — and the number is kept alive by machines currently in showrooms.
How this machine actually loads a filter
A tall tourer with luggage and a passenger spends its long days at a steady throttle position, which is exactly the condition in which a filter gives no warning. Restriction shows itself in transitions — the pull out of a hairpin, the overtake on a pass — not in two hours of cruising, so the element quietly gathers pollen, insects and road dust while nothing feels different. Nor is it meant to: a panel in a standard airbox does not make a Versys 1000 noticeably stronger. What changes is that the check now has a result, since an air line returns the cloth to where it began.
Care and cleaning
Blow the element through with compressed air from the clean side outwards; over a road-only season that is the whole service. Where a wet autumn has left more behind, lukewarm water and a mild detergent will take it, rinsed until the water runs clear. Dry it fully in moving air, never with heat and never over a flame, and refit it dry with nothing applied to the cloth. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Kawasaki KLZ Versys 1000 /S/SE built from 2012 to 2019. Twelve machines share the element — Kawasaki litre-class Z and Ninja models from 2010 to 2026 plus two Bimota models — and each is named under the Fitment tab. Match the code and the year rather than the model name.
