DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06380-05 is a shock absorber spring rated at 24-33 N/mm, 260 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • 140 mm of usable stroke
  • Free length 260 mm
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Öhlins part number 06380-05
  • Progressively wound
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Measured spring rate 24-33 N/mm (progressive)

Manufacture and Tolerance

Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted.

Size and Rate

Dimensionally this is a 46 mm × 260 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 24-33 N/mm.

Rate and the Linkage

A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect.

Applications

There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units.

What Fitting Involves

Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload. Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil. Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
