A Used Bike With an Unknown History
Tiger 800s of this age have usually passed through more than one owner and picked up modifications along the way. The front brake is a common one, and there is no reliable way to know which clamp geometry a particular machine is running without looking at it.
How to Look
Stand at the right-hand bar and check whether the two clamp bolts sit on a line square to the tube or whether one is set forward. That is the whole test, and it decides which of the two dedicated part numbers is correct.
The Final Specification
Triumph revised the Tiger 800 for 2018 with a lighter crank, shorter first gear, a colour display and considerably better throttle response. These last two model years are the most sorted version of a bike that had already been developed for seven.
XR and XC in One Product
The road-biased XR family and the off-road XC family share this switch, as do all the equipment levels between them. The source data names one Tiger 800, and mechanically that is what these motorcycles are.
Sealed Against a Long Wet Day
Elements sealed inside a body with no moulded joint. A Tiger is bought to be ridden regardless of forecast, and the sealing is what determines whether the controls behave identically at the end of the journey.
Three Anodised Finishes
Black, titanium and copper. On a handlebar already carrying guards, mirrors and mounts, black is generally the option that disappears.
Ten Years of Development
The Tiger 800 ran from 2011 to 2019 and Triumph improved it steadily throughout. The 2018 and 2019 bikes covered here are the most sorted version, and they are now cheap enough that owners spend on the details rather than trading up.
Sealed Elements
Contacts sealed inside a housing with no moulded joint. On an adventure bike ridden through weather that keeps other motorcycles indoors, that is the specification that decides how the controls feel after several seasons.
