Dust gets the attention, water decides more filter arguments. A rally-styled machine like the Valico 800 DSX Rally meets both in the same weekend — a dry track in the morning, a rain shower and a wet forest road by the afternoon — and the two states of a filter after that day are not the same. This is worth understanding before choosing a medium, because how an element behaves wet is a property of the material rather than of its filtration figure.
Key Features
- Polyester special non-woven, used dry, with a 7-micron filtration rating
- Airflow rated at 560 l/m²/sec — what a medium this strict costs in breathing
- Washable in water by design, and returned to service dry
- Direct exchange for the factory panel inside the unaltered airbox, without remapping
- About twice the filtering area of other performance elements
- Free of filter oil in every state, and guaranteed for two years from purchase
Wet, and what happens afterwards
A soaked paper panel is finished. The fibres swell, the pleats sag, and even after it dries the element never returns to the shape and resistance it left the factory with — it is simply a consumable that has met the wrong weather. Polyester is different in kind: the medium is washed on purpose as part of normal servicing, so getting it wet is not damage. What matters is the sequence afterwards. It must be dry all the way through before it goes back into the box, because a damp mat holds the next lot of dust like glue. If standing water rather than dust is the real problem on your routes, note that Sprint Filter builds a dedicated water-repellent medium, the P037, filtering at 37 microns with a rated 4,500 l/m²/sec.
Seven microns and what they cost
This element sits at the far end of the range, and the far end has a price. Filtration at 7 microns comes with a rated 560 l/m²/sec, where the standard P08 offers 80 microns and 5,050 — roughly a ninth of the flow, in exchange for holding back what the coarser weave lets by. Retention and airflow are two ends of one lever; pulling one down raises the other, and no medium escapes it. What none of them do is make power: the PM188T12 in a standard airbox leaves a standard Valico exactly as strong as it was, breathing cleaner air.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air from the clean side is the routine, and it is enough most of the time — the dust leaves along the path it took getting in. For a properly filthy ride, lukewarm water and a mild detergent take over, followed by rinsing until the run-off is clear. Drying happens in open air and nowhere else: no heat gun, no radiator, no flame, since heat deforms the medium permanently. It goes back in dry, with nothing applied to it. The maintenance sheet sits in the Downloads tab.
