Filter specifications are quoted per square metre of medium, so they read as properties of a material and hide the fact that both sides of the bargain are multiplied by the air actually going through. A 950 twin pulling a loaded DesertX up a pass moves a great deal of air per hour. That is why the fine end of the range exists for this machine — and it is also why the fine end costs more here than it would on something small. PM264T12 is the 7-micron mat, and on this bike both halves of the trade are amplified.
Key Features
- Dry polyester special nonwoven filtering at 7 µm, the finest medium Sprint Filter produces
- Rated flow of 560 l/m²/sec, against 5,050 for the standard woven panel in the same airbox
- No oil anywhere in its specification, so nothing can migrate downstream onto intake sensors
- Direct fit in the series airbox — no cutting, no adapter, no change to the mapping
- About double the filtering surface of an ordinary performance element
- Cleaned and reused rather than discarded, with two years of warranty from the purchase date
Throughput multiplies both sides
Mineral dust arrives in proportion to the air that carries it, so a hard-working large twin presents its element with more of it in a given hour than a small engine would. The 7-micron mat holds a share of that load the 80-micron weave was never drawn to catch, and the benefit grows with the same throughput. So does the bill. Passing a ninth of the standard rated flow is a real constraint, and it is imposed on every hour of running, including the long sealed transits that make up most of any trip. Finer means more retained and less passed: a trade, not a ranking, and the mat is not the better filter but the one drawn for harder air.
Choosing between them honestly
Neither element is a power part. Dropping any filter into an unmodified airbox leaves a standard DesertX exactly as strong as Ducati built it, and the fine mat gives back rated flow on top. The question is therefore about ground, not about performance: dry, loose, unbound surfaces as a routine part of the year argue for 7 microns, while tarmac with the occasional graded track does not. Sprint Filter catalogues only these two media for this housing, so the decision is made once and made against the riding that is actually planned.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air is the standing routine, applied to the clean side and worked outward so the load retraces its way out of the mat. Where a dusty stage leaves more than air will lift, tepid water with mild detergent takes it off, rinsed until the run-off is clean. Drying is done in moving air at room temperature only: heat, not dirt, is what ends this material, and it does so without leaving a mark you would notice. Refit dry and untreated. The manufacturer's maintenance instructions are attached under the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Catalogued for the Ducati DesertX of 2022 to 2026, one machine on this code. The DesertX V2 introduced later carries a different part number, so the build year decides. The Fitment tab lists the years covered.
