The trade between filtration and flow is almost always explained in one direction: a finer cloth catches more and passes less. This element is the same sentence read backwards, and it is the only one in the range for this airbox that gives something up at the fine end rather than at the flow end. At 85 microns the F1-85 is the coarsest medium listed for the CFMOTO MT-X 1000 — coarser than the 80-micron standard element, never mind the 7-micron nonwoven — and it flows close to three times what the standard cloth does. Both halves of that are real, and the second one is the reason the first is accepted.
Key Features
- 85-micron dry polyester, rated at 15,000 l/m²/sec
- The highest-flow and the coarsest of the three media for this airbox
- No filter oil at any stage; serviced with a compressed-air line
- Fits the unmodified series airbox; nothing cut, nothing remapped
- Approximately double the surface area of a comparable performance element
- Reusable for the life of the motorcycle; two-year warranty
Reading the trade from the other side
Every description of a fine filter lists what it costs in flow. Far fewer state the reverse, so here it is: opening the weave means smaller particles that the standard cloth would have held now pass. On a track surface, where the air is largely what other machines stir up, that is a price worth paying for the flow. On gravel, on a dry unsurfaced road, or behind traffic in a long dry summer it is not, and the range answers that case with a different element altogether. There is no ordering here in which one of the three is simply better — each of them is a position on the same trade, chosen by where the machine is being ridden.
The part of the claim that is not made
A higher flow rating is a statement about what the element can supply, not about what the engine will draw. Fitted to an otherwise standard MT-X 1000, this filter does not make the motorcycle noticeably quicker — no drop-in element does, and a listing that says otherwise has left the subject of filters. What it does provide is a large reserve of flow that stays available because the cloth is washed rather than replaced, plus the same practical properties as the rest of the range: dry, oil-free, no coating anywhere near the sensors, and a service you can carry out yourself.
Care and cleaning
Blow it through with compressed air from the clean side outwards, so that the load leaves by the route it arrived on. If the surface is greasy, lukewarm water with a little mild detergent will lift it; rinse until nothing further comes away. Let it dry in moving air at its own pace, well clear of heat guns, radiators and flames, and refit it dry with nothing applied. The maintenance sheet for the SM292S F1-85 is in the Downloads tab on this page.
