Look for a performance filter for a 150 of this class and most of what comes back is oiled: cotton gauze or foam, shipped damp or with a bottle in the box, relying on tack to catch what the weave is too open to stop. The V-Ixion is fuel injected, and an injected engine measures its air before it decides anything at all. Whatever leaves the filter travels towards the instruments doing that measuring. The Sprint Filter P08 PM116S settles the question by having no oil in it: a dry woven polyester element that filters through fabric geometry and nothing else, cleaned with an air line and put straight back.
Key Features
- Dry from the first kilometre to the last — no tack oil to buy, apply or misjudge
- Single-layer woven polyester spun from threads of 22 microns and upwards
- Filtration at 80 microns with a flow of 5,050 litres per square metre per second
- Roughly double the filtering area of other performance filters
- Takes the place of the paper cartridge in the series airbox — no modification, no remap
- Washable and reusable, with two years of cover from the date of purchase
A dose nobody can check
In an oiled filter the oil is a working part, which makes the amount of it a decision the owner takes at every clean. Too little and the open weave passes what it was supposed to stop; too much and the surplus is drawn towards the throttle body. Neither error announces itself, and there is no way to inspect the result afterwards, because the filter looks much the same either way. A dry weave removes the decision altogether. Its retention is a property of the fabric, identical after the tenth cleaning and the first, and the routine contains no step that can be performed badly.
Numbers, and what they are not
Sprint Filter's comparison puts the dry P08 at 93.13 per cent retention of 100 micron test particles and a four-layer oiled cotton element at 76.42 per cent under the same test. Useful to know, and still not a performance promise: a standard V-Ixion gains no power from an element that drops into the series housing, and any description saying otherwise is describing something else. What the change buys is an intake restriction that begins low and holds, rather than closing up unnoticed as paper fills — plus a machine that goes back together the same evening, because there is no drying and re-oiling to wait for.
Care and cleaning
Air first: from the clean side, worked outwards, which handles ordinary service intervals. Water second, when it is really needed — lukewarm, with a mild detergent, rinsed until it runs clear. Then drying, all the way through and in open air only; heat and flame damage the weave, and a PM116S refitted damp is worse than one left dirty. It goes back dry and is never oiled. Sprint Filter's maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Yamaha FZ150i V-Ixion, 2008 to 2018. The same airbox carried four machines of that generation in 125 and 150 cc form, all of them served by this element; the Fitment tab has the details.
