DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 08790-11 is a pair of fork springs rated at 11.0 N/mm, 260 mm long with a 25.5 mm inner diameter. Factory fork springs are chosen for an average rider on an average road; few riders are either.
Key Features
- 146 mm of usable stroke
- Free length 260 mm
- Supplied as a pair
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Inner diameter 25.5 mm
- Öhlins part number 08790-11
- Measured spring rate 11.0 N/mm
How Öhlins Makes Them
The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976.
The Numbers That Matter
The 25.5 mm bore and 260 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 11.0 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.
Choosing 11.0 N/mm
Very firm rates keep the chassis attitude stable when the brakes are used at their limit, at the cost of ride comfort. A rate this high is track territory or for a heavy rider: it stops the fork collapsing under sustained heavy braking. Very firm rates keep the geometry stable but ask the damping to work harder over small inputs. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
Applications
A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider?
Fitting
Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own. The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops.
Road Approval
Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
