Rarely Removed for Weight
On an adventure bike the stand usually goes because it has been bent, and a replacement is not to hand. The switch leaves with the bracket either way.
The Chain
Sidestand, clutch and gear position are read together. Break the chain and the engine will not run with a gear engaged, which on a loaded bike far from home is more than inconvenient.
Closing It Properly
This unit completes the loop the way the controller expects. Nothing is bridged and nothing is stored for a later diagnostic to find.
Bosch Cornering ABS
KTM fitted lean-sensitive braking to the 1190 before any rival offered it. The system worked well enough that the whole class followed within two seasons.
A Hundred and Fifty Horsepower
From the LC8 twin, in a motorcycle intended for continents. It was faster than the sports tourers of its day and considerably more comfortable.
Where the Switch Sits
Low on the left, behind the front wheel's spray. Salt, grit and pressure washing between them shorten its life considerably.
Five Minutes
One connector near the swingarm pivot. No bodywork removal and no tools worth listing.
Nothing Cut
KTM's own plug. On a bike a long way from a workshop, an installation with no splices is the one still working at the far end.
Reversible
The standard switch refits with the stand whenever the motorcycle returns to normal use.

On a touring bike that still has a stand, the loop is worth keeping connected.
Cheap Now, Capable Still
A decade of depreciation has made the 1190 one of the most motorcycle per pound anybody can buy. The electronics still hold up against current bikes and the engine has proved durable, which is why so many are still in daily use.
