The number that decides this purchase is not 14 microns, it is 1,800. A Sprint Filter P14 holds back far more of what the road carries than a general road element does, and it passes far less air while doing it: 1,800 litres per square metre per second against the 5,050 of the P08. On the 1050 Speed Triple RS that deserves a straight answer rather than small print, because a big triple only calls on its full intake demand in the upper third of the rev range.
Key Features
- Fourteen-micron dry non-woven medium, finer than the P037 at 37 microns, coarser than the T12 at 7
- No oil and no tackifier, so nothing can migrate onto a hot-film air sensor
- Rated at 1,800 l/m²/sec: retention bought with flow, stated openly rather than buried
- Media area roughly doubled against a conventional sports element, folded into the original envelope
- Drops into the series airbox without modification and without a fuelling change
- Cleaned and refitted rather than bought again, and guaranteed for two years from purchase
When the flow figure actually matters
An intake restriction shows itself where demand is highest: wide throttle, high revs, the biggest gulps of air the engine ever takes. Below that, the airbox sits on reserve it never touches. A Speed Triple RS commuting at part throttle, or covering distance at ordinary road speeds, does not live near that ceiling. Riders who genuinely do spend their time at the top of the tachometer on clean roads should stay with the P08; nothing here is an upgrade for them. The P14 is specified for the other pattern: everyday journeys, dry dusty summers, gravel-strewn lanes, long hot days when the air never comes clean.
Retention is the point, and it is invisible
No air filter makes a standard engine feel stronger, and this one is not sold on that claim. What a finer medium changes is how much abrasive mineral dust gets past it over tens of thousands of kilometres. That is a slow account, settled at high mileage in bore and ring wear and in what an oil analysis turns up, never on a dyno sheet in the first week. It is why a fine element makes most sense to an owner who intends to keep the motorcycle for years.
Care and cleaning
Service PM193P14 instead of replacing it. Lift it out, hold an air line at a sensible distance and push the dust back through the inner face, against the direction it entered. Stubborn deposits come out with lukewarm water and a mild household detergent, followed by a thorough rinse. Drying is where elements get ruined: give it time in the open, keep it clear of radiators, hot air guns and naked flame, and refit it bone dry. It is never oiled. The full cleaning instructions are in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the Triumph Speed Triple RS of the 1050 generation, 2018 to 2020, and not for the 1200 model that replaced it in 2021, which takes a different filter. This element covers three machines: the Speed Triple R (2016–2017), the Speed Triple RS (2018–2020) and the Speed Triple S (2016–2020).
