How much dust an engine has to deal with is not decided by how hard it is ridden. It is decided by how much air it moves, and the Rocket 3 moves more of it per kilometre than almost anything else on the road, because that is what the largest engine Triumph has ever put in a production motorcycle does at any throttle opening. Ridden gently for an hour, it has still drawn a great deal of air through its airbox — and every particle suspended in that air arrived at the element whether the ride was spirited or not.
Key Features
- Dry special non-woven medium rated at 14 microns, used entirely without oil
- Rated flow of 1,800 l/m²/sec, against 5,050 l/m²/sec for the standard P08
- A finer medium retains more and passes less — one property traded for another, not an upgrade
- Around twice the media area of a conventional sports element
- Fits the standard airbox in the original position: no cutting, no brackets, no fuelling change
- Cleaned with compressed air and refitted; two years' warranty from the date of purchase
Dose is displacement times distance
Think of what reaches the element as a dose rather than an event: the concentration of dust in the air, multiplied by the volume of air pulled through. Riders can influence the first term a little by choosing roads. The second term is set by the engine, and on this machine it is set high and cannot be argued with. That is the honest reason a fine medium is worth considering here even for an owner who never sees a gravel road — a modest concentration, worked through a very large volume, is still a substantial quantity of solids arriving at the inlet side over a summer.
What the trade costs and what it never buys
The P14 passes 1,800 l/m²/sec where the P08 passes 5,050. On an engine of this character — enormous torque, delivered low, with no need to chase revs — that ceiling is a long way above where the machine normally works, which makes the trade easier to accept than it would be on a sports bike. It buys no power: nothing fitted to a standard airbox does, and it would be dishonest to suggest a finer medium is the exception. It buys retention, and a filter that is cleaned instead of replaced.
Care and cleaning
A non-woven mat holds what it catches within its thickness rather than on its face, so give it time. Compressed air over the inner, clean face, worked patiently across the pleats so the dust leaves the way it entered. Lukewarm water with a little mild detergent when air alone is not enough, rinsed until clear. Dry it in open air, never with heat or a flame, and refit it only when completely dry. It is never oiled. The cleaning sheet for the PM233P14 is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
The P14 element for the Triumph Rocket 3, model years 2019 to 2026, in both R and GT form. It goes into the standard airbox in the original position, and the same housing takes the P08 if the air turns out to be cleaner than expected.
