The MSX125 and the Grom are one motorcycle. Honda gives it two names, both show up on the fitment list for this filter, and that occasionally leaves people wondering whether they have the wrong part. They have not. Sprint Filter shapes and catalogues an element around an airbox, and an airbox has no idea what is on the side panel. One shape, one part number: the PM180S covers the first-generation minibike from 2013 through 2019 under either badge, with the road-and-track P08 medium inside it.
Key Features
- Single-layer polyester cloth that filters dry — nothing is oiled, nothing can be carried off it
- Roughly twice the filtering area of a typical performance element
- 80 microns across the weave, 5,050 litres per square metre per second through it
- The 22-micron figure belongs to the polyester thread itself, not to the gaps between threads
- Slots into the series airbox as it stands: no rework, no cutting, no remap
- Cleanable instead of disposable, warranted two years, built to see the motorcycle out
Counted in starts, not in kilometres
This is a bike that seldom goes far and very often goes. Service schedules are written in kilometres because that is how most motorcycles wear out, but a 125 used this way gathers cold starts, warm-up runs and short errands far faster than distance. Two seasons of near-daily riding still read as a modest number on the dial. For a paper element that is an awkward mismatch: the mileage that would trigger replacement arrives long after the filter has been breathing traffic air. An element you can pull out, hold up to the light and clean takes the schedule out of the decision: checking costs minutes, so it happens.
What 80 microns and 5,050 litres describe
Two numbers define this medium, and they pull against each other: a finer cloth catches more and passes less. That is why the rest of the range reads as it does: P037 at 37 microns and 4,500 litres per square metre per second, P14 at 14 microns and 1,800, T12 at 7 microns and 560. None of them is an upgrade on the P08. They are answers to different air — standing dust, wet weather, desert going. For a small machine on surfaced roads the P08 sits where it should. One distinction is easy to trip over: the 22 microns quoted for the polyester is the diameter of the thread, not the size of the openings between threads.
Care and cleaning
The P08 is regenerated rather than replaced. Compressed air does most of the work — apply it to the clean face so the dirt leaves by the route it arrived. After a dirty spell, warm water with a mild detergent goes further; rinse until nothing more comes out. Drying happens in open air and nowhere else, since heat and flame both ruin the medium, and the PM180S goes back in only once it is dry through. The maintenance leaflet sits in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Listed for the Honda MSX125 from 2013 to 2019. The identical element serves the Grom of 2014 to 2019, the same machine under Honda's other name, which is why the list carries two entries for a single airbox. Both appear in the Fitment tab.
