Where the Cycles Accumulate
Indicators, headlight and the mode menu, all on this side. On a motorcycle used for actual journeys these contacts do several times the work of anything on the right.
Ultraviolet and Printing
Ducati's markings are applied to the surface of the moulded shell and they are the first thing to go. A machined body carries none, so there is nothing to lose in the first place.
Thermal Cycling
Cold start, warm engine, cold again, several hundred times a year. Plastics creep under that treatment and aluminium does not, which is why old moulded blocks develop play and old milled ones do not.
Snap Fittings and a Big Twin
The vibration signature of an L-twin works on clipped joints in a way an inline four does not. Ten years of it and the two halves no longer hold each other as tightly as they did.
Depth in the Surface
The anodised layer is part of the aluminium rather than a film over it. Scratches take colour with them instead of exposing bright metal beneath a chip.
Undone in Twenty Minutes
The harness is never cut, so the original assembly can be refitted at any point. An unmodified loom is worth having on a motorcycle that will change hands.
A Hundred and Forty-Five Horsepower
The S was a higher state of tune as well as better suspension, which is a distinction most manufacturers do not bother to make between trim levels.
Ride-by-Wire From Launch
An electronic throttle from the first model year brought modes and traction control to a model that had previously been about as sophisticated as a bicycle.
A Radiator in a 1993 Shape
Keeping the Monster recognisable while fitting liquid cooling was the hardest part of the whole project, and it is a considerable piece of industrial design that is rarely credited as one.
