The JP ES 005 replaces the Panigale 1199 R's plastic reed housing with a billet cover that seals on an O-ring and has nothing inside it left to age.

A Homologation Special
Ducati built the R with titanium rods, a lighter crank and a two-ring piston, all of it to satisfy World Superbike requirements rather than a marketing brief.
Aluminium Instead
A cover machined from solid, sealing on an O-ring in a turned groove. There is nothing inside it to age and nothing to inspect for the life of the engine.
Machined Rather Than Cast
Turned from billet with the sealing face cut in one operation, which is why it seals on a ring alone rather than needing compound.
What the Reeds Do
They allow air in one direction only, so exhaust pressure cannot push gas back towards the filter. A crack removes that protection entirely.
What a Cracked Reed Does
It stops sealing in one direction, letting exhaust gas travel back towards the airbox. The residue coats the element and is usually found while looking for something else.
An Older Head Deserves Care
On a motorcycle past a decade the threads have been undisturbed for a long time. Working slowly and cleanly is cheaper than the alternative.
Why Aluminium Instead
There is nothing inside a machined cover to age, nothing to inspect and nothing to replace for the life of the engine. It seals on an O-ring in a turned groove against the head's own finished face, which means it can come off and go back on repeatedly without damaging anything underneath it.
Which Ducatis Have Two
Every twin and every V4 carries an assembly on each head, so a complete job means two covers and access to both banks. Owners occasionally order one, fit it to the front cylinder because it is the easy one, and then discover the rear still has its housing and its hose.
