DescriptionThe whole story▼
The original DesertX chain guard is a long, thin plastic moulding cantilevered off the swingarm, and it behaves like one: it resonates at certain revs, it sags in summer heat, and a single hard hit from a thrown stone leaves a permanent kink. The carbon version is the same shape with none of those habits.
Key Features
- Full-length guard covering the upper chain run from the front sprocket area back towards the rear wheel
- Autoclave carbon holds its line along its whole length instead of drooping where it is unsupported
- Fits the original swingarm mounting points with the standard fasteners
- Four surfaces: clear coat, matt, satin and raw
- Does not buzz or resonate the way a long plastic moulding does at cruising revs
Length Is the Problem Carbon Solves
Stiffness in a beam rises steeply with material stiffness, and that is the whole story here. A guard of this length made from a plastic that is fine for a short cover will flex visibly when you press it with a thumb. The same shape in a cured carbon laminate barely moves. That has two practical effects: it stays where it was set relative to the chain, and it stops acting as a sounding board.
Heat matters too. The guard runs above the chain and downstream of the engine, so on a long summer climb it sees temperatures that will slowly relax a thermoplastic. Carbon simply does not creep there.
Fitment and Compatibility
Ducati DesertX, 2022 to 2026, on the standard swingarm using the original mounting points and screws. Check chain alignment after fitting if the bike has been run with a non-standard sprocket set.
Road Approval
Fullsix publishes neither an ABE nor an EC type-approval number for this guard. Chain guards can be treated as safety-relevant in a technical inspection, so confirm the requirement for your registration before road use.
Before You Order
Check what is currently on the bike. A surprising number of used DesertX machines arrive with the chain guard removed entirely, usually after an off-road outing damaged it, and the mounting points may have been left with the original screws missing. Those screws are standard Ducati items and worth having to hand before the carbon part arrives.
On finish: this panel sits low, gets chain lube on its underside and is seen from the left in every side-on photograph of the motorcycle. That combination argues for matt or satin — dark enough to disappear, forgiving enough not to show the film of lube that will eventually settle on it. Clear coat here is a commitment to regular cleaning.
