DescriptionThe whole story▼
Kawasaki's own silencer on this generation of ZX-10R weighs 2.4 kg, which is already light for a litre superbike. Akrapovic halves it. Getting to 1.2 kg from a starting point that low is harder than taking five kilos off a heavy tourer, and it is the number this product is bought for.
Key Features
- 1.2 kg, exactly half the weight of the standard silencer
- EC type approved, with a separate US EPA approval
- Titanium outer sleeve with carbon fibre detailing
- 180.3 PS, with the increase read at 9,400 rpm
- 104.5 Nm, gaining 1.3 at the same engine speed
- Removable noise insert supplied
Half of Very Little
A percentage means different things at different starting weights. Fifty per cent off a 2.4 kg part is 1.2 kg — a smaller absolute saving than many systems in this catalogue manage, and a harder one to engineer, because there was no catalytic converter box or heat shielding to delete. Every gram came out of the silencer itself.
On a 198 kg superbike the effect is not in the total but in where the mass sat: high, behind the rear axle, exactly where a bike least wants weight when it changes direction.
Approved, but Read Which Approval
Akrapovic records EC type approval and US EPA approval for this silencer. It does not record a separate ECE approval, which some other systems in the range carry alongside the EC one.
For German registration the EC type approval is what matters and no entry in the vehicle documents is required. This is a type approval and not an ABE, and the paperwork in the box is what a Prüfer will want to see.
The Heat Shield and the Link Pipe
Akrapovic states plainly that when this slip-on is combined with the optional link pipe, the optional heat shield cannot be mounted. Both are separate accessories, and anyone planning to buy all three should know that two of them are mutually exclusive.
That is the kind of detail that turns up after the parcel arrives if nobody writes it down first.
Where the Numbers Land
179.3 PS to 180.3, and 104.4 Nm to 104.5, with the recorded increases of 1.7 PS and 1.3 Nm both falling at 9,400 rpm. On a machine already making 180 horsepower, that is a rounding error and this page will not pretend otherwise.
The reasons to fit it are the kilogram, the sound and the look of a titanium can where Kawasaki fitted a steel one.
An Insert for the Track
A removable noise insert comes with the silencer. The ZX-10R of this generation is a common track-day machine, and circuits that measure static noise are the reason the insert exists.
Five Model Years
Kawasaki built this generation of ZX-10R from 2011 until the 2016 redesign. One part number covers all of it. These are used motorcycles now, often second or third owner, and frequently ridden on track rather than on the road.
Road Approval
EC type approved, plus a US EPA approval. No entry in the vehicle documents is required.
