One is how much a medium holds back, quoted as a percentage against a particle size. The other is how much dirt it can take before its resistance climbs, which is a question of area and depth rather than of fineness. The Sprint Filter PM185P14 is worth reading on both counts: a dry special non-woven filtering at 14 microns with a rated 1,800 l/m²/sec, folded into the NVX housing with roughly twice the filter area of other performance filters. The fineness buys the retention; the area buys the interval.

Key Features

Dry non-woven medium with a 14-micron filtration figure, for dusty conditions

Rated airflow of 1,800 l/m²/sec, the price paid for that retention

Roughly double the filtering area of other performance filters in the same space

Fits the series airbox without modification and with no change to the mapping

Cleaned with compressed air and reused rather than replaced at every service

Covered by a two-year warranty from the day it is bought

Retention and capacity are different things

A fine medium catches more of what reaches it, which also means it fills sooner per square centimetre. If the area stayed the same, that would show up as a shorter useful interval — the same fabric doing more work in the same space. Area is what buys the interval back, and it is why a filter for a small scooter is worth building with as much surface as the housing allows. On the NVX the housing is what it is and cannot grow, so area inside it is the only version of that answer available.

Choosing by the road rather than by the number

Sprint Filter's media line up as one continuous trade: 7 microns and a rated 560 l/m²/sec for the T12 at the extreme end, 14 and 1,800 here, 37 and 4,500 for the water-repellent P037, 80 and 5,050 for the standard P08, 85 and 15,000 for the racing medium. Reading that as a ranking is the usual mistake, since every step buys retention and sells flow. A 155 cm³ single is not short of the flow this medium leaves it, so the practical question is the surface it works over: unsealed lanes, dry-season dust and building sites make the case for 14 microns, clean city tarmac does not. What none of them do is add power to a standard engine.

Care and cleaning

The element is restored with an air line held against the clean side, pushing the load back out through the face that caught it. When that no longer suffices, lukewarm water and a mild detergent finish the job; rinse thoroughly and let it dry in moving air, away from heaters and open flame, then refit it dry. There is no oil in the procedure and none in the medium. Sprint Filter's maintenance sheet for the PM185P14 is filed in the Downloads tab.

Fitment & Compatibility

Specified for the Yamaha NVX 155 built from 2017 to 2026, replacing the original element in the standard airbox.
