Sprint Filter builds this element to last the life of the motorcycle, and on a generation that changes hands as often as this one that has a consequence people rarely think through. A cellulose panel is a decision that expires at the next service. A racing weave is not: fit PM58S F1-85 to a 2008–2016 CBR1000RR and it will in all likelihood still be in the airbox when the bike is advertised, and the next owner after that. The person who lives with 85 µm is usually not the person who chose it, which is an argument for choosing it deliberately and writing it down.
Key Features
- P08 F1-85 racing specification: 85 µm filtration at a rated 15,000 l/m²/sec
- Dry polyester, no oil at any point, so nothing travels down the intake tract
- Deep pleating fits considerably more cloth into the standard airbox volume
- Fits the original CBR1000RR housing unaltered — no cutting, no remapping
- Regenerated with compressed air rather than replaced at intervals
- Two years of guarantee from purchase; rated for the service life of the machine
A part that is sold with the bike
Put beside the standard element for this housing, the racing weave costs a little over twice as much, and that is the smaller half of what is being decided. The larger half is time. Eighty-five microns is a step back from eighty in exchange for roughly three times the rated flow, and that exchange is in force every hour the engine runs, on a commute as much as on a circuit. It is defensible where the machine is used hard and inspected on a schedule counted in running hours. It is much harder to defend where the bike will spend a decade being ridden on Sundays by three different people, none of whom knows it is fitted.
Two lines in a folder
The practical answer is documentation rather than caution. If the element is fitted, note the reference in the service folder with the date, so the next inspection is made against what is actually in the box. It is also fully reversible — the standard PM58S drops into the same housing — which makes the racing weave a position rather than a commitment. No element makes a standard superbike stronger, this one included; what it changes is how much air the cloth can pass and how much it holds back.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air is applied to the clean side of PM58S F1-85 and pushed outward, so deposits leave by the route they arrived on instead of being driven into the weave. When a season leaves more than air will lift, hand-warm water with a mild detergent finishes it; rinse until clear and dry it in moving air. Heat guns, exhausts and flames are off limits, and it goes back dry and untreated. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
PM58S F1-85 covers the Honda CBR1000RR from 2008 to 2016 — a single machine on this reference. The same housing also takes the standard PM58S: the fitment is settled either way, only the specification is open. Match the year in the registration document against the compatibility list on this page before ordering.
