A three-cylinder engine breathes in a rhythm of its own. With the crankpins set at 120 degrees, the cylinders fire every 240 degrees of crankshaft rotation, which means three separate intake events per two turns and a gap between each one. The airbox never sees a smooth, averaged demand; it sees a sequence of sharp pulls with pauses in between. That is why the MT-09 feels the way it does on a small throttle opening, and why the intake side deserves more attention than a service schedule usually gives it. The Sprint Filter P08 PM149S is a dry polyester element that fits the standard airbox and is cleaned rather than replaced.
Key Features
- Roughly twice the filtering surface of a comparable performance filter
- Dry P08 polyester throughout, never oiled, so nothing can find its way onto the intake sensors
- Particles are held at 80 microns while the medium flows 5,050 litres per square metre per second
- A straight swap in the standard airbox: no modification, no remap, homologation untouched
- Washable and reusable, back in service after a pass with the air line
- A two-year warranty applies from the date of purchase
Peak demand, not average demand
A filter is usually described with a single flow figure, as though air arrived at a constant rate. On a triple it does not. Each intake stroke asks for its share in a short window, and the medium has to hand it over inside that window or the cylinder simply gets slightly less. Filtering surface is what buys that margin: the P08 offers roughly double the area of other performance filters, so the air moving through any given square centimetre is travelling slower, and the pressure drop during the pull stays smaller. It is a modest effect on a standard engine. It is also the effect that matters on an engine whose character lives in the first quarter of throttle travel.
Why nothing here is oiled
This generation runs ride-by-wire and reads intake air with a heated-film sensor, and both of those depend on being fed clean, unaltered air. Oiled cotton gauze filters work by making the air sticky, which puts a consumable film directly upstream of the sensor and the throttle bodies. The P08 has no oil in it at any point in its life. It filters by weave — polyester thread from 22 microns in diameter, laid to a mesh that stops particles at 80 microns — and it is regenerated with compressed air rather than a bottle of spray.
Care and cleaning
An air line does most of it: blow the element through from the clean side outwards and the routine is done. Anything more takes lukewarm water and a mild detergent, rinsed until it runs clear. The element then dries in open air, completely, no heat and no flame near it, and goes back in dry. Oil is never applied; the polyester was never oiled. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Yamaha MT-09 built from 2014 to 2020. The same PM149S element serves six machines built around this airbox, including the FZ-09, the FJ-09, the Niken 850/GT and the XSR 900; the full list is in the Fitment tab.
