Sprint Filter P08 Air Filter for Road & Track – Ducati Hyperstrada 821 (2013–2015) CM61S

The facts.

DescriptionThe whole story▼

The Hyperstrada took a supermoto and sent it touring: panniers, a screen, a larger tank and a seat you can sit on for a day. That changes what the 821 twin is asked to do. Instead of short violent bursts it spends hours at a high, steady throttle opening with weight on board, and the further from home you get, the more it matters what has been passing through the intake all day. Sprint Filter answers that with area, and with a retention figure that has been measured rather than asserted.

Key Features

  • Dry polyester medium — oil plays no part in how it holds dust, so nothing can migrate at temperature
  • About twice the filtering area of other performance elements, which is what sustained flow draws on
  • Holds back 93.13 % of 100 µm particles; four-layer oiled cotton manages 76.42 % in the same comparison
  • Fits the series airbox as delivered — nothing to modify before a trip, nothing to undo after one
  • Cleaned at the roadside with any air line; no filter oil to carry in a pannier
  • Two years of warranty from purchase

A loaded bike is a different engine

Luggage and a passenger raise the throttle opening needed for any given speed, and the engine's appetite for air goes up with it. A restricted element costs most under exactly that condition, because the pressure it drops scales with what is being drawn through. A supermoto motor hauling touring weight already works closer to its limits than the naked version ever does; the margin that hides a tired filter is not there. None of which means the part adds power — it means it stops taking any away.

What actually gets past

Distance turns a small percentage into a real quantity. Over a long summer of touring, the difference between a medium that stops nine parts in ten and one that stops rather fewer is not academic; it is measured in what ends up on the bores. The published comparison above is the reason to prefer a dry weave over an oiled gauze on a bike used this way.

Care and cleaning

On the road, an air line at any fuel station is enough: blow through the CM61S from its clean face until it stops shedding dust. At home, wash it in warm water with a gentle household cleaner, flush the soap out completely, and let it hang until every fibre is dry. Never speed that up with heat and never with a flame. It is refitted dry, with no oiling stage at all. Sprint Filter's maintenance leaflet can be downloaded from the Downloads tab.
