The RT has spent a good part of its working life in uniform. Across Europe it serves as a patrol and escort machine, and that duty is unlike any private owner's riding: hours at walking pace, hours standing still with the engine running, low speeds where nothing is being rammed cleanly through the nose and where exhaust and brake dust hang at road level. A filter does not age in kilometres. It ages by the volume of air pulled through it and by what that air held, and an RT can fill its element over a full shift while the odometer barely moves. PM142S is the washable answer to a duty cycle the trip meter never sees.
Key Features
- A single dry layer of woven polyester; nothing is oiled, so nothing can travel onto the intake sensors
- Aperture 80 µm, flow 5,050 l/m²/sec — the P08 is Sprint Filter's road and track medium
- Polyester thread from ø 22 microns, which is the fibre and not the opening it forms
- About double the filtering surface of comparable performance elements, in the standard frame
- Drops in where the paper panel came out: no modification to the airbox, no remap
- Regenerated with compressed air, built for the life of the machine, two years of warranty
Time on the clock is not distance
Idling and low-speed work make up their own operating mode. The engine keeps breathing at a steady rate whether or not the wheels are turning, so a machine that spends its day in traffic, in convoy, or stationary at an incident moves a great deal of air for very few kilometres. There is no gauge for this and no warning on the dash, because fuelling is trimmed against measured airflow and absorbs a rising restriction in silence. A service schedule written in kilometres for a private owner covering distance is the wrong instrument for it entirely.
A part that leaves the ordering list
Where a motorcycle is maintained to a plan by somebody other than its rider, the useful property of this element is that it stops being an item to be stocked. It comes out, gets blown through and goes back on the same visit, so the work never waits on a delivery and no shelf has to carry it. What it does not do is worth stating clearly: swapping the panel adds no noticeable power to a standard RT, and a machine ridden at these speeds would have no use for it if it did. The gain is a low intake resistance that is reset instead of being allowed to climb.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air does the routine work on the PM142S — nozzle to the clean face, blowing outward through the weave. If the element has taken on more than dust, wash it in warm water with a mild detergent and rinse until the water comes away clear. It must then dry completely in moving air, never against heat and never near a flame, and it is refitted dry with nothing applied to it. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the BMW R 1200 RT of 2014 to 2018, fitting the standard airbox in place of the paper element. Nine machines across the 1200 and 1250 boxers share this part number; all of them are listed in the Fitment tab.
