The 80 µm standard panel and the 85 µm racing cloth both have plain part numbers for a Panigale 1199. The 37 µm water-repellent weave does not. On this housing it exists in exactly two forms, both of them race assemblies, and this is the less expensive of the pair — five sixths of what the WorldSBK build asks, the difference between them being the carbon fibre frame that this one does without.

No inexpensive route to this cloth

That is the honest position and it belongs before anything else. Somebody who wants the water-repellent weave on a 1199 cannot have it cheaply, because no plain element exists for this housing. The question is therefore not which version to buy but whether the cloth is worth a race assembly's outlay at all, and for most 1199s ridden in ordinary conditions the answer is no. The standard panel for this airbox is dry, oil-free and washable too, and it costs a small fraction of this.

When the answer changes

When the motorcycle is used in weather rather than around it. Long distances through unsettled seasons, winter roads with salt on them, a machine that lives outside under a cover: those are hours of exposure, and they are the hours this medium was drawn for. It still adds nothing to the engine. No element in an untouched airbox makes a standard 1199 stronger in a way anyone can measure, and R127S-WP-AVIO gives up a little throughput against the standard panel besides. What it adds is a cloth that behaves the same in June and in February.

Care and cleaning

Take it out, put an air line on the clean face and drive the load back out the way it came in, rather than from the dirty side, which only presses it further into the weave. A wash is occasional rather than routine: warm water, mild detergent, rinsed until clear. Drying then happens in still air and on the element's own schedule, with hot-air guns, radiators and naked flame kept out of it entirely, because heat is the single thing that shortens a polyester weave's life.
