DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 60280-30 is a shock absorber spring rated at 30 N/mm, 200 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Free length 200 mm
  • Öhlins part number 60280-30
  • Measured spring rate 30 N/mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against.

Size and Rate

Öhlins holds the free length at 200 mm and the inner diameter at 46 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

What This Rate Does

A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. The trade is fork dive under braking — noticeable, but rarely the limiting factor on the road. Lighter riders usually end up a step or two below the factory rate once sag is measured properly. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it.

Applications

This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight.

Installation

The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
