Where It Sits
Öhlins publishes 6 mm, 36 mm for 21018-04 — the dimensions are the identity of the part. Twin-tube pistons have separate paths for compression and rebound, which is the whole point of the design. Öhlins machines the ports rather than casting them, so the edges stay sharp and the flow predictable. Rebuilding a piston means keeping the shim order, because the stack is the tuning.
Original Öhlins Part
Öhlins numbers every position so a workshop can order precisely what it needs, not a whole assembly. Suspension is one of the few areas where the original part is genuinely the cheaper decision. Order by part number. The dimensions below are the ones Öhlins publishes for it. If the unit is already apart, compare the published dimensions with the part in your hand.
Getting the Number Right
21018-04 is the Öhlins number for this position — the same one printed in the service documentation. Öhlins states dimension a 6 mm, dimension b 36 mm for this number, and those figures are the deciding ones. Bands are consumables and are replaced at every rebuild. Rebuilding a piston means keeping the shim order, because the stack is the tuning.
Fitting and Setup Service
Fitting service parts means opening a pressurised unit. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do that here, with the right tools and a dyno check afterwards — just ask.
