The Bike That Reset the Class
When KTM launched the 1190 in 2013 with 150 hp, lean-angle-sensitive traction control and cornering ABS, no other adventure motorcycle had any of the three. The segment spent the following five years catching up and largely failed.
Cornering ABS Was New
Bosch developed the system with KTM and this was among the first motorcycles anywhere to carry it. Braking hard while leaned over stopped being a mistake that ended badly, which on a heavy touring bike is a genuinely significant change.
A Cluster Doing a Great Deal
Indicators, horn, beam and the navigation of a menu carrying riding modes, ABS settings and traction levels. For 2013 that was an unusual amount of function on one housing and it has not become less busy since.
Ten Years of Weather
The earliest 1190s are now well over a decade old and most have covered serious distance. The moulded housing has not broken; the plastic has hardened, the clipped halves have developed play and the buttons across them stopped confirming anything years ago.
Winter Gloves for Months
Adventure bikes are ridden year-round by riders who bought them to be used. Under thick gloves the machined step between one control and the next is the only reliable way to be certain which button was pressed.
Sealed Against Both
Grit works into a moulded joint and stays; water at least drains. Sealed elements inside a one-piece milled body exclude both, which on a machine hosed down after every trail section matters continuously.
Black Anodised
One finish, converted into the surface rather than laid on top. On a handlebar already carrying guards and a navigation mount it adds nothing to the clutter and dulls with contact rather than chipping.
