DescriptionThe whole story▼
Two different Akrapovic Racing Lines for Honda's 650 four are road legal, and both say the same thing in their small print: the EC type approval holds only while a catalytic converter is fitted. This is the converter both of them mean.
Key Features
- Required by the Racing Lines S-H6R12-HAFT and S-H6R14-HEGEHT for their approval
- Covers four Honda model names across seven model years
- Honeycomb metal carrier with a precious metal coating
- A revised part number; the original is no longer listed
- Akrapovic records an EC approval against it
One Converter, Two Systems
Akrapovic built a Racing Line for the 2014 to 2016 CB650F and CBR650F, and a second for the whole run to 2020. Both keep their EC and ECE approval on the same condition, and both use this converter to satisfy it.
That is useful to know when specifying: whichever of the two systems fits your bike, the converter part number is the same.
Four Names, One Engine
Honda's 649 cc inline four ran in the naked CB650F and faired CBR650F from 2014, then in the restyled CB650R and CBR650R from 2019. The exhaust route stayed put throughout, and so did the converter.
Honda changed the platform again after 2020, and later machines take a different part.
A Revised Number
The suffix marks this as a revision. The original converter is no longer in the current price list, and this is what Akrapovic ships for these motorcycles today.
When It Is the Right Order
Two situations. Either a Racing Line is going on and the bike has to stay road legal, or an existing converter has failed and the motorcycle needs to pass its next inspection.
The second case is more common on a bike of this age than most owners expect. A converter that has been through a decade of cold starts and one bad misfire is a consumable, not a permanent fitting.
The Coating Is the Product
A metal honeycomb carries palladium, rhodium and platinum on its surface, and those metals do the chemistry: carbon monoxide and unburned fuel out, carbon dioxide and water vapour in their place.
None of that is visible. A converter cannot be judged by looking at it, which is the argument against buying one second hand and the reason the price is what it is.
Flow, Not Just Compliance
Akrapovic states that its converters are performance oriented and built to preserve the sound and flow of its own systems. The published power figures for the Racing Lines are measured with this converter in place, not without it.
An A2 Four
The 650 four is unusual in a class dominated by twins, and it is one of the few four-cylinder machines a rider on a restricted licence can have. That is exactly the customer for whom keeping the type approval intact is not optional.
Road Approval
An EC approval is recorded against this converter. In either Racing Line it is what keeps the system legal on a public road.
