What a short list is saying

A medium this strict is aimed at air that stays a suspension of dust for hours together: a dry piste in high summer, a graded road with a plume standing over it, a track four other machines have already crossed. Those are conditions a GS gets bought for and its road-going relatives do not. If your own R 1200 GS spends its year on sealed surfaces with a gravel car park at the end of the day, the fitment list has still put you here, but the standard weave is the better balance for that riding and choosing it is no kind of compromise.

One part in nine

The figure to look at before ordering is the flow. A rated 5,050 l/m²/sec through the standard cloth becomes 560 through this mat — about one part in nine kept, and the widest gap between any two media in the whole Sprint Filter range. That is what pays for the retention, since the two always move against each other, and it is charged continuously rather than beyond some threshold. None of it is a power decision in either direction: the PM142T12 leaves a standard R 1200 GS exactly as strong as it was, and no element fitted inside a series airbox has ever done otherwise. It is bought for what the air is carrying.

Care and cleaning

Frequent cleaning is part of the specification here rather than an afterthought. Compressed air on the side facing the engine, driven outwards, brings the mat back towards the resistance it started from; a stage that has loaded it beyond what air will lift is finished with hand-warm water and a mild detergent, rinsed until the water stops colouring.
