DescriptionThe whole story▼
A type-approved complete exhaust for a 650 twin is unusual, because the emissions maths rarely works out on a bike this size. Akrapovic managed it by keeping a catalytic converter inside the system, and the result takes 3.1 kg off a Kawasaki Ninja 650 — 36.8 per cent — while adding 2.2 PS and staying road legal.
Key Features
- 5.37 kg against the standard 8.5 kg: 3.1 kg and 36.8 per cent less
- 2.2 PS (1.6 kW) more at 8,450 rpm and 1.7 Nm more at 8,400 rpm, with the improvement spread across the range
- Catalytic converter inside the system — the reason a full exhaust on a 650 can hold EC and ECE type approval
- High-grade lightweight titanium muffler with stainless steel headers
- Handmade carbon fibre end cap
- Plug-and-play with no remapping, despite being a complete system
- Noise insert supplied for track days with a limit
What Three Kilograms Do to a 650
The Ninja 650 weighs around 196 kg wet. Taking 3.1 kg out of the exhaust is more than one and a half per cent of the whole motorcycle, and because a full system removes mass from under the engine as well as from the tail, it lowers the centre of gravity rather than just lightening the back end. On a bike bought by riders stepping up from an A2 licence, that shows up as less effort at low speed.
The power gain of 2.2 PS on a 62.9 PS engine is proportionally larger than what a litre bike gets from a full system — three and a half per cent rather than half a per cent.
A Full System on a 650, Without a Remap
Complete systems usually come with a caveat about fuelling. This one does not: Akrapovic states that no ECU remapping is required, so the Ninja 650 and Z650 run on their standard maps with the whole exhaust path replaced. For a bike bought as sensible transport, that removes the one cost that normally follows a full system.
The work itself is real, though. Sixty minutes covers taking off the headers, the collector and the standard catalytic converter, and on the Ninja the lower fairing has to come away first. What comes back on weighs a fraction of what left.
Fitment and Compatibility
S-K6R14-HEGEHT/2 fits the Kawasaki Ninja 650 and the Z650 from model year 2021 through 2026. One condition applies: the system fits motorcycles whose standard exhaust runs a double lambda sensor. Installation takes about an hour with the supplied instructions.
Road Approval
EC type approval and ECE type approval, with the certificates supplied and downloadable from this page. Because the catalytic converter is part of the system, nothing is removed from the emissions path and the machine remains a legal road motorcycle in the European Union.
